Starting with a Welcome to Country by one of the Elders, you’ll be introduced to the customs and history of the land, providing a deep sense of respect and appreciation for the local culture.
The 2-hour guided walk through the stunning landscapes of Masig will be a fantastic opportunity to learn about the various uses of local flora for medicinal purposes. Discovering how these traditional practices are still relevant today showcases the enduring wisdom of the community.
The chance to learn basket weaving and spear making is a truly hands-on experience. As spears are still used today, you’ll gain insight into the traditional fishing practices that have sustained the community for generations.
The cultural lunch prepared by the local guide is sure to be a delightful treat, featuring authentic dishes that provide a taste of the region’s culinary heritage. Throughout the day, the guide’s storytelling will add depth to the experience, sharing historical anecdotes and cultural tales that connect you to the traditions and way of life of the local people.
Masig (Yorke) Island is part of the Central Islands, a cluster of sand cays, with beautiful beaches. This tiny cay is everything an idyllic, tropical destination should be. A green gem in a blue sea, measuring no more than 800m wide and 2.7km long, with coconut tree fringed sandy beaches. Surrounded by stunningly clear, vibrant blue waters, home to coral gardens and an array of marine creatures, including turtles and dugongs. The ground level is no more than 3m above sea level and more than half of Masig retains undisturbed vegetation. The island’s permanent population numbers less than 300 and their cultural context has been passed on through languages and traditional upbringing, as a way of life by their ancestors from time immemorial.
